Renal Medicine Department:
The Nephrology and Hemodialysis services at Mouwasat Hospital-Dammam are designed to cater to the unique needs of each patient with kidney disease, helping them restore their physical, social, emotional, and financial well-being. The department provides 16 hours of service per day, seven days a week, with 24-hour on-call services, collaborating with other departments to enhance patient outcomes.

Scope of Service
This Scope of Service List provides a comprehensive range of services offered by the Renal Medicine Unit. The unit caters to a diverse patient population and provides specialized care in renal medicine

  • Dialysis Unit:
Description: The unit comprises 46 stations that offer renal replacement therapy. It also includes an isolation facility for patients with blood and airborne infections

Target Patients:
- Patients with End-Stage Renal disease
- Patients with Acute kidney injury and requiring dialysis.

Services:
- Regular hemodialysis
- Online hemodiafiltration.


  • Outpatient Clinics:

Description: The Outpatient Clinics provide follow-up services for patients. It operates 16 hours a day.

Target Patients:
- Chronic kidney disease

- End-stage kidney disease

- Kidney Transplant patients

- Cardio-renal patients

- Glomerular and Interstitial kidney diseases

- Autoimmune disorders with renal involvement

- Congenital kidney diseases

- Renal stones disorders

- Metabolic disorders with renal involvement, most commonly diabetic nephropathy.

- Electrolytes disorders

  • Inpatient Service:

Description:

The unit provides a dedicated inpatient service for various renal conditions.

Target Patients:

- Acute kidney injury

- Glomerulonephritis

- Chronic kidney disease-related complications (Anemia, uncontrolled Mineral bone disorder, life-threatening electrolyte disorders, etc.)

- End Stage Renal Failure patients with access-related complications.

- Kidney transplant-related complications

-Electrolyte derangements


  • Renal Medicine Consultation Service:

Description: The Renal Medicine Consultation Service provides consultation to other specialties.

Target Patients: Patients who are admitted under the care of other specialties who need renal expertise

  • Critical Care Nephrology Service:

Description: Critical Care Nephrology service follows a multidisciplinary approach with Intensivists, Cardiologists, and other specialties.

Target Patients: Critically ill patients require renal support, especially patients with acute kidney injury and severe electrolyte derangements.

Services:

- Acute hemodialysis

- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy

- Medical management for electrolytes, acid-base disorders, glomerulonephritis.


  • Therapeutic Plasmapheresis/Exchange (TPE) Service:

Description: Therapeutic Plasmapheresis/Exchange (TPE) is a medical procedure that separates the liquid part of the blood (plasma) from the blood cells. During plasmapheresis, the plasma is replaced with another solution like fresh frozen plasma, saline, or albumin. This process helps remove harmful substances from the plasma, such as antibodies that attack the immune system.

Target Patients:

TPE can be offered to patients with various indications, including but not limited to:

1. Guillain-Barre syndrome

2. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

3. Myasthenia gravis

4. Hyperviscosity syndrome

5. Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage

6. Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome

7. Multiple sclerosis with acute CNS demyelination unresponsive to steroids

8. Rapidly progressive vasculitis

9. Catastrophic thrombosis due to antiphospholipid syndrome

10. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis

11. Severe systemic lupus erythematosus

12. Multiple myeloma cast nephropathy

13. RBC alloimmunization in pregnancy

14. Mushroom Poisoning

15. Hemolytic uremic syndrome

16. Thyroid storm when antithyroid drugs are ineffective or contraindicated

17. Pemphigus Vulgaris (severe and refractory to first-line management)

18. Pyoderma gangrenosum


  • Emergency Service:

Description: The Emergency Service provides 24/7 emergency coverage via a monthly updated on-call list for Physicians and Nurses.

Availability: Round-the-clock availability for urgent renal care needs.

Service Coverage

· Hemodialysis unit works in 2 shifts (7 am to 5 pm)

· Outpatient clinic from 8 am to 12 midnight.

· Emergency on-call coverage 24/7 for Physicians and Nurses.


Insurance/Fees criteria
· The patient may utilize insurance coverage provided by his private insurance provider which includes Mouwasat Hospital. In addition, payment can be made in cash or through credit cards directly during the registration process at the reception counter. Cash service fees will be disclosed at the time of the initial visit/individuals can call the hospital unified number 920004477 for fees-related information.
