Riyadh – Mouwasat Hospital

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Mouwasat Hospital Riyadh has achieved a remarkable medical milestone by saving the life of Mrs. Reham Fouad and her unborn baby in an exceptionally rare condition known as heterotopic pregnancy, a simultaneous intrauterine and extrauterine pregnancy. This condition occurs in only 1 out of every 30,000 pregnancies, making it a highly unusual and complex case.

Case Details

The patient arrived in critical condition, suffering from a ruptured fallopian tube, internal bleeding, and unstable vital signs. The complexity of the case was compounded by the presence of a normal intrauterine pregnancy, which often leads to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment.

What made this case even more challenging was that the ectopic pregnancy was located in the narrow segment of the fallopian tube adjacent to the uterus, an uncommon site for such pregnancies.

Advanced Surgical Intervention

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Hassan Khedr, the surgical team performed a highly delicate procedure to remove the ruptured ectopic pregnancy using laparoscopic surgery through three small incisions, avoiding the need for open abdominal surgery.

Despite the complexity and the rupture, the team successfully preserved the intrauterine pregnancy. Both the mother and the fetus are now in stable condition.

Significance of the Achievement

This success highlights Mouwasat Hospital’s expertise in managing rare and high-risk obstetric cases, utilizing advanced minimally invasive techniques and world-class medical skills to ensure the safety of both mother and child.

Case Details and Diagnosis

A 44‑year‑old female patient was referred to Mouwasat Hospital from another healthcare facility. Comprehensive clinical evaluation and advanced imaging revealed a large tumor located at the skull base, close to critical neurological centers—necessitating an urgent and highly precise surgical intervention due to its sensitive location.

The tumor was completely resected using:

  • A high‑resolution surgical microscope
