A resident recovered from near-complete paralysis after enduring over two months of suffering thanks to the dedicated efforts of the medical team at Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam.

The male patient, in his fifties, was initially paralyzed and unable to move, leading him to be admitted to a major hospital in the region. An MRI scan revealed a large tumor at the base of the central skull, extending to its rear, causing pressure on the brainstem. This pressure resulted in ventricular hydrocephalus and limb paralysis. The hospital that initially treated him only placed a ventriculoperitoneal shunt to drain cerebrospinal fluid without addressing the tumor due to its complex location, size, and spread.

After almost two months with the patient bedridden, the company he worked for made extensive efforts to seek other hospitals that could provide the necessary care. However, many hospitals in the region refused to accept the case due to its complexity.

The company then expanded its search to hospitals in Riyadh, but no private hospital agreed to take on the case. Finally, Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, confident in its capabilities and medical expertise, accepted the patient, reassuring his company that they were fully prepared to offer the highest levels of medical care, especially in complex neurosurgery cases.

Upon arrival, the patient underwent a clinical examination confirming his paralysis and full dependence on a urinary catheter. A navigational MRI revealed the tumor’s pressure on the brainstem and cranial nerves, and its proximity to critical blood vessels. The treating physician explained the comprehensive treatment plan to the company doctor, including that if the tumor was fully removed, the drainage tube would no longer be needed.

The surgery was performed under the supervision of Dr. Sultan Al-Saiari, Consultant Neurosurgeon. The operation lasted approximately 12 hours, during which the Anesthesia Department, led by Dr. Wael, played a crucial role in maintaining the patient’s stability under anesthesia. This stability contributed positively to the patient’s vital signs, allowing the operation to proceed smoothly without complications, despite previous surgical interventions.

The surgery was completed successfully, the tumor was fully removed, and the drainage tube was no longer required. The patient was transferred to the adult neurological ICU after awakening.

Once the patient’s condition stabilized in the ICU, an MRI confirmed the complete removal of the tumor. The patient began to regain movement in his limbs, significantly lifting his spirits, validating the meticulous surgical plan.

In recognition of this success, the company's director and other administrators visited Al-Mouwasat Hospital's senior management to express their gratitude to the hospital’s staff and medical teams overseeing the patient’s care.

The patient remains in the hospital under the follow-up care of related departments, including the rehabilitation and physical therapy units. He is expected to return to his normal life and resume work following physical therapy.

It is worth noting that performing such complex procedures in neurosurgery requires highly skilled surgeons and advanced technology to achieve the desired outcomes. This aligns with Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company's vision of recruiting top talents in specialized medical fields and providing the latest medical technologies and equipment.

Life-Saving Intervention for a Patient with Severe Bleeding Caused by a Renal Tumor-Related Aneurysm

The medical team successfully treated a patient suffering from severe internal bleeding resulting from an aneurysmal dilation of blood vessels associated with a tumor in the left kidney.
The case required urgent intervention, which was performed under local anesthesia using advanced interventional radiology techniques.

The procedure involved the precise embolization of the arteries feeding the aneurysmal lesion, which resulted in:

  • Complete cessation of bleeding
  • Stabilization of the patient’s condition
  • Safe discharge from the hospital after noticeable improvement

Another Success: Treating a Complex Case of Acute Venous Thrombosis

In a related achievement, the hospital recorded another successful intervention for a patient suffering from acute thrombosis in the pelvic and lower limb veins, a condition that poses serious risks if not managed promptly.

Using the latest interventional radiology technologies, the medical team performed catheter-directed venous thrombectomy, which contributed to:

  • Significant improvement in blood flow
  • Rapid stabilization of the patient’s clinical condition
  • Prevention of further complications

Riyadh – Mouwasat Hospital

Mouwasat Hospital in Riyadh received a patient referred from another hospital in the city who was suffering from rectal bleeding and a suspected bowel obstruction caused by an advanced cancerous tumor located in the upper rectum. Following an urgent assessment, the patient was admitted for the necessary laboratory tests and imaging studies.

Evaluation of the Rectal Tumor

A coordinated evaluation was conducted between the General Surgery Department and the Oncology Department to determine the optimal treatment plan. After reviewing the diagnostic results, the medical team decided to proceed with a surgical intervention led by: Dr. Ahmed Abdel Fattah Habib – Consultant of General Surgery & Oncology, with the assistance of Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Hindawi – Specialist in General Surgery.

The patient was then prepared for a precise laparoscopic surgical procedure targeting the affected section of the colon and rectum.

Laparoscopic Resection of the Rectal Tumor

The entire procedure was performed using advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques and included:

  • Resection of the lower sigmoid colon and upper rectum
  • Colon-to-rectum anastomosis (reconnection)
  • Radical lymph node dissection

This complex operation required a high level of surgical expertise due to the tumor’s advanced stage and its presence in a sensitive anatomical region.

Postoperative Recovery

By the grace of God, the surgery was completed successfully, and the patient was discharged in good health.
He will continue to be monitored through follow-up visits in both the Surgery Clinic and the Oncology Clinic to ensure the completion of his treatment plan according to the highest medical standards.

Mouwasat’s Commitment to Advanced Medical Care

This operation is considered one of the most complex laparoscopic procedures that require specialized expertise and advanced surgical technologies.
This success aligns with Mouwasat Hospital Riyadh’s commitment to providing:

  • State-of-the-art surgical techniques
  • Highly qualified medical professionals
  • Advanced healthcare services that ensure the highest standards of safety and quality for patients
