The medical team at the Cardiac Surgery Department of Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Riyadh has successfully performed the excision of a rare tumor in the heart of a patient in her forties.

Dr. Walid Al-Ayadi, the consultant cardiac surgeon, explained that the patient arrived at the emergency room with difficulty breathing and severe chest and abdominal pain. Immediately, necessary tests, including electrocardiogram, diagnostic coronary angiography, echocardiography, and brain and abdominal CT scans, revealed multiple clots in the brain and the spleen resulting from the fragmentation of parts of a large unstable tumor located in the left atrium of the heart. There was also partial occlusion of the mitral valve inlet, which could obstruct blood circulation and potentially lead to sudden death. Additionally, there was a possibility of multiple cerebral clots causing the patient to suffer from a permanent coma or paralysis if small tumor fragments reached the brain.

After discussing the case with the medical team, which consisted of cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, and intensive care specialists, as well as obtaining written consent from the patient after explaining all the details about her condition and the recommended treatment plan, the patient was prepared for an urgent, high-risk heart surgery to completely remove the tumor from the heart. The tumor measured 5cm by 3cm, and the latest surgical techniques were utilized, along with echocardiography-guided minimally invasive procedures, to ensure complete excision of the tumor from its roots. Thankfully, the patient woke up immediately after the surgery without any side effects. She recovered well and was discharged from the hospital on the fifth-day post-surgery in stable condition.

It is worth mentioning that this type of tumor is considered rare, with a global incidence rate of 0.05% according to the latest international statistics. This procedure represents one of the most advanced and technology-dependent surgeries. This falls in line with Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company's vision to provide the highest levels of medical technologies, specialized professionals, and top-of-line medical care for all of our patients.

Al Khobar – Mouwasat Hospital

Mouwasat Hospital in Al Khobar continues to strengthen its position as a leading center in pediatric urology and advanced robotic surgery, following the successful treatment of a 4-year-old girl who was suffering from recurrent flank pain and severe renal discomfort caused by a congenital ureteral obstruction.

Accurate Diagnosis Through Advanced Imaging

The young patient was referred to Mouwasat Hospital after undergoing a series of diagnostic studies, including:

  • Ultrasound imaging
  • CT scan
  • Nuclear medicine renal scans conducted in the hospital’s Nuclear Medicine Department

The results revealed a significant narrowing of the ureter, the tube responsible for transferring urine from the kidney to the bladder. This obstruction led to hydronephrosis, reduced kidney function, and repeated pain episodes, increasing the risk of recurrent urinary infections.

Congenital ureteral obstruction is considered one of the more complex pediatric urological conditions, and if left untreated, it may gradually progress to kidney damage or even renal failure.

Robotic Repair of the Ureteral Obstruction

Thanks to the expertise of Dr. Abdulrahman bin Abdulkarim Al Muhrej, Consultant in Urologic Oncology, the robotic system allowed for high-precision suturing and delicate handling of the tissues, ensuring an optimal reconstruction outcome. The procedure was completed smoothly, and the child was able to leave the hospital the next day, resuming eating and walking with only minimal pain.

Why Robotic Surgery Is the Preferred Technique

Robotic-assisted surgery has become the gold standard for managing complex ureteral conditions due to several advantages:

  • Exceptional precision in tissue handling
  • Smaller incisions and reduced postoperative pain
  • Lower blood loss
  • Faster recovery time
  • Higher success rates, especially in delicate pediatric cases

Dr. Al Muhrej has performed numerous robotic repairs for ureteral obstruction in both children and adults, achieving consistently excellent clinical outcomes.

Expanding the Role of Robotic Surgery in Urology

Robotic systems are now widely utilized at Mouwasat Hospital for a variety of urological procedures across all age groups, including the following:

  • Partial and radical nephrectomy (kidney removal)
  • Adrenal gland surgery
  • Prostate surgery
  • Bladder surgery

This reflects Mouwasat Hospital’s commitment to incorporating advanced surgical technology and providing patients with advanced, minimally invasive treatment options.

Important Medical Advice

Dr. Al Muhrej stresses the importance of early evaluation when kidney dilation is detected, as determining the cause promptly is crucial to preserving kidney function. Not all cases require surgery, but timely consultation with a specialist helps guide appropriate management and prevent long-term complications.

Qatif - Mouwasat Hospital

Mouwasat Hospital in Qatif continues to achieve outstanding medical successes in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases using advanced endoscopic technologies. This comes following the successful diagnosis and management of a complex case involving a 60-year-old patient who had been experiencing rectal bleeding for several months without receiving a clear diagnosis.

A Diagnostic Journey: From Prolonged Symptoms to a Precise Discovery

The patient had visited several hospitals within and outside the region over the course of months, yet no definitive explanation for his recurrent symptoms was identified. Upon arriving at Mouwasat Hospital in Qatif, he was evaluated by the Gastroenterology Clinic team led by Dr. Mahdi Al-Jaroudi, Gastroenterology & Endoscopy Consultant, who conducted a comprehensive assessment while taking into account his chronic respiratory condition and hypertension—factors that required careful medical decision-making.

Based on the initial evaluation, the medical team recommended performing a colonoscopy at the hospital’s Advanced Endoscopy Unit to determine the source of bleeding.

Discovery and Endoscopic Removal of the Lesion

During the colonoscopy, the medical team discovered a large polyp measuring 4.5 cm inside the colon. Thanks to the expertise of the specialized team and the advanced capabilities of the endoscopy unit, the polyp was completely removed endoscopically without the need for surgical intervention and without any complications—demonstrating the high level of precision and skill in handling such cases.

Pathology Findings: Early-Stage Colon Cancer Successfully Controlled

Pathology results confirmed that the lesion was a cancerous colon tumor. The positive outcome was that the tumor had been fully removed, and all surrounding tissues were completely clear, indicating successful early control of the condition and eliminating the need for further invasive treatments.

Advanced Care Aligned with International Standards

This achievement reflects Mouwasat Hospital in Qatif’s commitment to delivering advanced medical care using state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic technologies. The hospital continues to provide high-quality services led by a distinguished team of specialists dedicated to ensuring the best outcomes for patients.
