Dammam – Mouwasat Hospital
Thanks to God, the medical team at Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam succeeded in restoring mobility to a man in his fifties after he had suffered from near-complete paralysis for more than two months as a result of a large tumor located at the base of the skull.
The patient was initially transferred to a major hospital in the region after developing sudden paralysis that left him completely unable to move. MRI imaging revealed a large skull base tumor extending from the middle cranial fossa to the posterior region.
The tumor caused:
Given the complexity of the tumor and the difficulty of its location, the first hospital limited its intervention to inserting a ventriculoperitoneal shunt without performing surgical removal of the tumor. The patient remained bedridden with no noticeable improvement.
Due to the inability of several hospitals inside and outside the region to accept the case, the patient’s company turned to Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, which immediately accepted him due to its capabilities and specialized expertise in complex neurosurgery.
Upon arrival, the clinical examination showed near-complete paralysis and total dependence on a urinary catheter. Image-guided MRI revealed that the tumor was compressing the brainstem and cranial nerves and was located near highly critical blood vessels.
The medical team explained a comprehensive treatment plan that included complete removal of the tumor and removal of the shunt after the surgery’s success.
The surgery was performed by a specialized medical team of neurosurgeons. The procedure lasted 12 hours, during which the anesthesia team played a pivotal role in maintaining stable vital signs throughout the surgery despite previous surgical interventions in the area.
By the grace of God, the tumor was completely removed, and the shunt was taken out. The patient was then transferred to the neuro-intensive care unit for close monitoring.
After the patient’s condition stabilized, MRI scans confirmed the complete removal of the tumor. The patient began gradually regaining movement, showing clear improvement in limb strength, which positively impacted his psychological well-being.
He also began a physiotherapy program at the hospital’s rehabilitation center, and he is expected to return to his normal life and work upon completing the rehabilitation plan.
The company’s manager and several administrators visited the hospital administration to express their gratitude and appreciation to the medical and administrative teams for their tremendous efforts and high professionalism in handling the case.
