Successful Surgery Saves the Life of a Young Girl with a Large Brain Tumor
Recently, the medical team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Khobar successfully saved the life of a young girl less than 10 years old who was suffering from a large, life-threatening brain tumor.
The girl initially complained of persistent headaches, vomiting, and fluctuating consciousness. After visiting several hospitals abroad, her father rushed her to the emergency department at Al-Mouwasat Hospital, Al-Khobar. Upon her arrival, all necessary tests and scans were promptly conducted, and within less than 30 minutes, the case was diagnosed with a massive tumor pressing on the brain. The child was immediately admitted to the pediatric neurological intensive care unit. As her condition continued to deteriorate, with unstable vital signs and worsening consciousness, she was administered mannitol to temporarily reduce brain pressure in preparation for surgery.
After assessing the case, the neurosurgery specialist determined the urgency of the situation. Time was critical, and any delay could have led to a coma or, God forbid, death. Neurosurgeon Dr. Sultan Al-Saiari met with the girl's parents to explain the severity of the condition and emphasized the need for immediate surgery, as any delay could prove fatal. In such emergencies, MRI scans and other pre-surgical diagnostics, typically used in non-urgent cases, could not be requested because of the urgency. The parents were reassured about the hospital's highly qualified staff and state-of-the-art equipment, which ensures world-class results, as evidenced by the swift diagnosis and transfer to the specialized department within just 30 minutes of her arrival.
The surgery commenced around 11 PM, with the primary goal of alleviating brain pressure and removing as much of the tumor as possible. Thankfully, the entire tumor was successfully excised during the five-hour surgery, and the girl no longer required additional surgery. This was confirmed through a follow-up MRI.
By the following morning, all symptoms—including headaches and vomiting—had vanished, and her consciousness returned to normal. Within less than a week, the girl was discharged, fully recovered, and returned home in excellent health.
It is worth mentioning that such advanced surgeries, particularly in the field of neurosurgery, require exceptional surgical skills and the latest technology to achieve the desired outcomes, especially in complex cases like this. This aligns with the vision of Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company in attracting highly specialized talent and providing cutting-edge medical technology and equipment.
