The success of installing an insulin pump for a baby in Mouwasat Hospital Dammam
The Pediatric Department at Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam has received a newly diagnosed diabetic baby girl who was transferred from a private hospital in the Eastern Province due to the difficulty of controlling sugar levels and the frequent occurrence of severe hypoglycemia on low doses that do not exceed a unit of insulin.
The case was followed up under the supervision of Dr. Salman Wanas, a consultant pediatric endocrinologist and a dietician, Sakina, where the baby’s weight did not exceed 10 kg, as the time and quantity of food given to the baby was irregular, and it was impossible to treat and follow up the case outside the hospital and give her insulin doses (pens). The latest technology has been used in this field.
The infant's insulin pump was installed with a sensor with a dynamic stop feature before and during the cessation of diabetes with precise programming of the base pump levels, carbohydrate index, and insulin sensitivity index. The mother of the infant underwent extensive training on the pump to know the carbohydrate rate and functional insulin therapy.
By God’s grace, the condition and blood sugar levels were brought under control, while effectively protecting the baby from hypoglycemia and the direct impact this has on her neurological development.
The child's condition stabilized after being discharged from the hospital, where the cumulative sugar levels were in the range of 6.8%, and the girl's mother regained the ability to sleep peacefully.
