Immediately upon the newborn's arrival, the medical staff in the neonatal unit worked to stabilize his condition relatively. Immediately, Dr. Nevin Mamdouh, a consultant cardiologist and interventional catheterist for children and newborns, was summoned, who examined the newborn and performed the necessary tests. Ultrasound scans of the heart showed the presence of a complex congenital disease, which is a double inversion in the ventricles and arteries, severe enlargement of the heart muscle, and complete obstruction of the pulmonary valve. Which prevents blood from reaching the lungs and loading it with oxygen, which is the cause of severe blueness.
Dr. Nevin performed a temporary drug intervention to keep the arterial connection open. Then she performed a CT scan, which confirmed the same diagnosis, with the presence of severe tortuosity of the arterial connection and narrowing of the origin of the right pulmonary artery, which makes the condition more difficult. The only life-saving solution was to make a stent for the arterial connection. Due to its severe curvature and the presence of narrowing in the right pulmonary artery, Dr. Nevin placed 3 telescopic stents, the first of which was in the right pulmonary artery and the rest in the arterial connection. The lung was successfully perfused well and the newborn recovered.
It is worth mentioning that this type of catheter is considered the most advanced and complex in the field of interventional neonatal heart catheters, which is unique to Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam in the Eastern Province. This is in line with the vision of Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company in attracting competencies and precise medical specialties while providing the latest medical technologies and equipment.
