Modern medical technologies contribute to ending the suffering of an octogenarian patient at Al-Mouwasat Hospital Madinah
The medical team at the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurology was able to relieve the agony of an eighty-year-old patient thanks to God and His grace. A patient with acute back pain was brought to the emergency room at Al-Mouwasat Hospital Madinah. The patient was evaluated and subjected to diagnostic testing and x-rays, which indicated a compression fracture in the first cervical vertebra due to significant bone thinning and brittleness.
The Department of Neurosurgery and Neurology, lead by Dr. Mohammed Abdul Latif, was brought in to explain the patient's situation to his family and to psychologically prepare him for the procedure owing to his elderly age. A treatment plan was devised for the patient, which included selecting a limited surgical intervention to stabilize the fracture in the cervical vertebrae through the skin using metal screws and injecting medical cement specially designed to reinforce the vertebrae without major surgical incision, in order to alleviate the patient's suffering, speed his recovery, and shorten his hospital stay.
The procedure was successful with the aid of God, employing the most recent scientific methods and surgical tools utilized in this sort of surgery, including the use of a new X-ray machine within the operating room and the greatest equipment and pharmaceuticals for anesthetizing elderly people. Before the procedure, the fixation system was fitted via the skin without a significant surgical incision, and medical cement was injected to strengthen the vertebrae. The correctness of the fixation system was validated by X-rays within the operating room.
The patient was only in the hospital for three days following the procedure, which is a short duration for such patients when compared to standard surgeries. The patient walked out of the hospital, and a plan was put in place for physical therapy sessions to rehabilitate him so that he could have a regular life.
This type of operation is considered the most advanced in the field of neurosurgery, spine surgery, and spinal cord surgery, and it is consistent with Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company's vision of attracting highly qualified and specialized medical professionals while providing the latest technologies and equipment to ensure the highest quality of medical care.
