The Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery Department at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Madinah was able to relieve the pain of a 72-year-old patient who had been unable to control his four limbs and bladder for over three months while laying in bed, thanks to Allah's mercy and success.

Due to clinical signs of pressure on the cervical spinal cord and root nerves, as well as a fracture in the thoracic vertebrae, he underwent computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on his cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine upon his arrival at the hospital's emergency department.

Based on the test results, Dr. Magdy El-Hawary, a consultant in neurosurgery, spine surgery, and spinal column, developed a treatment plan that included three surgical interventions and a limited non-surgical intervention using medical cement injection to treat the fractured vertebrae after inflating a balloon that lifts the compressed vertebra, followed by injecting medical cement to support the vertebra and relieve back pain caused by the fracture. It is worth emphasizing that the three surgical operations were completed in a single session lasting no more than 5 hours.

After many interventions, the patient began a rehabilitation journey with the weak muscle rehabilitation team, and after laying in bed for more than three months, he began to sit inside and outside the bed within a week.

These surgical operations are considered high-precision and difficult treatments, which correspond with Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company's objective of attracting precise medical competences and specializations while delivering cutting-edge medical technology and equipment.

Al-Khobar – Mouwasat Hospital

The medical team at Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Khobar has successfully performed a robotic-assisted excision of a cancerous tumor located in the lower rectum for a patient in his forties, achieving a highly precise and safe surgical outcome.

Preoperative Treatment Plan

The patient was diagnosed with lower rectal cancer, and a comprehensive treatment plan was established, beginning with chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy to reduce the tumor size and prepare for optimal surgical intervention.

Robotic Surgical Intervention

The rectal excision procedure was carried out using the robotic surgical system under the leadership of Dr. Sami Al-Assari – Consultant of General Surgery, Robotic Surgery, and Colon & Rectal Surgery

The robotic platform played a crucial role in achieving excellent surgical precision, particularly in this challenging case, by enabling:

  • Smooth access to the narrow pelvic cavity,
  • Effective management of the additional complexity caused by the patient’s morbid obesity,
  • High-precision preservation of pelvic muscles and critical nerves,
  • Minimal intraoperative bleeding,
  • Enhanced accuracy in stapling and reconnecting the colon in the lower pelvis.

Surgical Outcome

By the grace of God, the surgery was completed successfully, the tumor was fully removed, and the patient recovered quickly. He was discharged in good health with no reported complications.

This achievement reinforces the advanced capabilities of Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Khobar in performing highly complex oncological procedures using state-of-the-art robotic surgery, contributing to improved patient outcomes and faster recovery times.

Al-Khobar – Mouwasat Hospital

The medical team at Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Khobar has successfully performed a corrective surgery for a recurrent inguinal hernia in a patient in his forties, using advanced robotic surgical technology. This achievement marks the first procedure of its kind in the private healthcare sector.

Case Details

The patient visited the general surgery clinic one year after undergoing a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair with mesh placement at another hospital. Unfortunately, the hernia reappeared within the first month after the initial operation, causing discomfort and prompting the patient to seek specialized care at Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Khobar.

Medical Evaluation and Surgical Intervention

Following a comprehensive evaluation, the medical team—led by Dr. Sami Al-Assari, Consultant of General Surgery, Obesity Surgery, Robotic Surgery, and Colon & Rectal Surgery, decided to perform a corrective robotic surgery due to the complexity and sensitivity of the case.

The robotic system enabled precise tissue dissection, complete removal of the recurrent hernia, and accurate placement of the mesh. The technology played a key role in reducing bleeding, minimizing postoperative pain, and protecting the vital structures surrounding the hernia site.

Surgical Outcome

By the grace of God, the surgery was successful, and the patient was discharged in good health and without complications.
This accomplishment further strengthens the position of Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Khobar as a leading center for advanced robotic surgeries in the region.
